10/13/2008

The Lady Patriot Volleyball Team defeated nationally ranked Midwestern State University on Monday night in the Burg Center .  DBU, who had previously lost to MSU earlier in the season, responded in a big way winning 3-1.  The victory propelled the Patriots overall record to 12-9, while MSU fell to 19-6.

DBU made a statement early winning set one and two in convincing manner.  The Lady Patriots took set one 25-21, smashing 14 kills on their way to victory.  Set two was no different with DBU killing 19 balls and holding MSU to only six kills in route to a 25-20 win.

Midwestern State bounced back in set three to cut DBU's lead to 2-1.  MSU ran away with the set winning 25-14, by using seven DBU errors and 14 kills.

The Lady Patriots did not let set three shake them and regrouped in the fourth set to finish off the match.  DBU raced out to an early five-point lead and then finished off the set, winning 25-20.  The Patriots secured the win with 16 kills, including the game winning kill by Senior Lauren Secord.

Freshman Christa Williams, from Ben Wheeler, TX, is the Athlete Spotlight for the month of October.  William's joins the DBU Lady Patriot Golf team from Martin's Mill High School where she was a three sport athlete.  In high school she competed in basketball, track, and golf.  William's was a two time state champion in golf and also a state champion in basketball.

William's was named the Women's Heartland Conference Golfer of the Week. The honor was announced by the conference office on Friday for her play in the DBU Classic on September 29 and 30.  Williams, who was playing her second collegiate tournament, led the charge for DBU by finishing in 15th place, with a 157. Williams, who shot an 80 on day one, rebounded on day two with a 77 to move into the top 15.  She led the team to a fifth place finish out of sixteen teams.  The team finished the highest out of the Heartland Conference teams which included St. Mary's (6th place), Newman (10th place), Incarnate Word (12th place), OPSU (15th place), and TAMIU (16th place).

Head Coach Kenny Trapp said, "Christa is deserving of this honor. She played well on day one but missed a couple of putts. She came back on day two and proved that she can play with anybody as a Freshman. I look forward to seeing her grow the rest of the year."

William's and The Lady Patriots will be in action again when they travel to Monterrey, California , to play in the CSU Classic, on October 5-7.
