DBU Named to President’s Community Service Honor Roll for Eighth Consecutive Year

Dallas Baptist University has been named to the 2014 U.S. President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the eighth consecutive year, and the fifth time to be recognized with distinction. DBU received this honor in recognition of its efforts to instill a spirit of servant leadership in each of its students.

DBU was one of four colleges from the state of Texas that was named to the Honor Roll with Distinction, a special commendation among the approximately 700 institutions across the nation to be honored. Each month, an estimated 2,000 DBU students provide over 10,000 service hours to non-profit organizations throughout the DFW Metroplex. Service activities reported include volunteering with Brother Bill's Helping Hand, North Texas Food Bank, Goodwill Industries of Dallas, organizations in the Oak Cliff community, Mission Arlington, Buckner International, and service-learning projects for course study.

Honorees are chosen based upon a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

Every degree at DBU has at least one service-learning component which integrates academic instruction, community service, and guided reflection from a Christ-centered, faith-based perspective in order to enhance student learning, to foster global civic responsibility, and to develop servant leaders. All courses play an important role in providing the student with an appropriate curricular foundation for service-learning.

Additionally, student-athletes participate in community service through the Global Sports Mission Initiative, where they have been involved in local and global projects.
