Alumna Partners with Origin Church in Vancouver

Before she ever attended her first missions class at Dallas Baptist University, the Lord has already been working in Brindley Taylor's heart to help her see every lost person through the eyes of His redemption. "At the young age of 15, I surrendered my life to God, and He gave me new eyes to see people as He saw them- broken, but loved."

Later, as a master's student in DBU's Global Leadership graduate program, she gained deeper insight into the mission field in classes taught by experienced professors. As her heart for the nations and her commitment to Jesus's Great Commission in Matthew 28 grew, she began to do her own research on missions and to ask God where "all nations" gather. "To my surprise," she reflects, "I discovered the nations are gathering on the university campus."

After graduating from DBU in 2017, Brindley left friends and family behind in Texas to answer a call to serve in Canada and partner with Origin Church, a church plant that meets on the campus of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and where she is serving as a campus minister. The mission of Origin Church is to "joyfully invest in others to spark a life journey with Jesus."

The church sets up and meets for worship on Sundays in one of the lecture halls on campus, and during the regular school week, Brindley's primary focus is to reach out and connect with first-year students. Currently, there are 58,000 students enrolled at UBC, with about 86,000 people visiting the campus every day. Among these large numbers, less than 1% claim to be Christians, making this university a needy field ripe for missionary engagement.

Furthermore, a fourth of the student population is international, many of whom are sent by their government to get an education and return as top leaders for their countries. "What better way to reach the world with the Gospel than where all nations are gathered on this university campus?"

In addition to leading Life Groups, running a beginner Alpha discipleship course, and coordinating the weekly Sunday gatherings, Brindley leads a yearly trip with Origin Church to Athens, Greece, to serve with a refugee organization.

It has been Brindley's joy to see the fruit of her obedience in connecting lost students to Christ and their lives consequently transformed, but the challenges of reaching more people for Christ on a secular university campus remain great and are only overcome with prayer and the encouragement of the body of Christ.
