Meet the Alexanders

Drs. Mark and Karen Alexander are full-time faculty members here at DBU. They have both taught classes for our MAGL program. This semester alone, Dr. Mark Alexander is teaching Introduction to Missiology, Chronological Bible Storying and CT: Urban Church Planting. Dr. Karen Alexander is teaching Literature of East Asia.

Dr. Mark was raised overseas in Argentina by missionary parents, and Dr. Karen's father was in the U.S. Air Force, taking the family from Texas to Turkey and then back before moving to Ohio and the Philippines.

Drs. Mark and Karen met as undergraduates at Baylor University and married when Dr. Karen graduated. After Dr. Mark completed a Master of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, they moved to Virginia where Dr. Karen completed a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Virginia.

While there, they pastored both Sharon and Mt. Tabor Baptist Churches in Buckingham County. They served as missionaries for 25 years with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in the city of Córdoba, Argentina and earned their doctorates along the way. Dr. Mark's is in Missions from Southwestern and Dr. Karen's is in English from Baylor. They have three grown children and four grandchildren.

Can you describe the ministry opportunities you have had while on the field?

Dr. Mark: "Our work is in the city of Córdoba (Argentina) revolved around four general areas. We worked in associational missionary work, which means we related to the Baptist churches in the city and the province or state region. We also ministered and taught in a Bible training institute that was sponsored by the local Baptist association. In addition to that, we were able to work directly in church planting. On our last two terms of service, we were involved with university students."

Dr. Karen: "I have to say that as a wife and mother, the ministry centered on what the kids were doing and where the kids were. We were able to work with children, women, and university students through Baylor's exchange program. The exchange program in Córdoba provided us with a platform to effectively reach students and professors through our relationship to the ministry.
