DBU’s AI Ethics Degree Is Shaping Next-Gen Leaders
"Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil." - Ephesians 5:15-16 NIV
It is certain that ChatGPT has entered the chat, so to speak. No matter where you look, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a part of the conversation — right down to composing emails and making text suggestions.
Indeed, in today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the ability to harness AI and data-driven insights for strategic decision-making is a critical skill set. But as the popular Marvel saying goes: "With great power comes great responsibility." This responsibility involves focusing on the ethical side of AI.
It's one of the reasons we have launched an AI ethics degree program at Dallas Baptist University (DBU): the Master of Science in Ethical AI and Strategic Decision Sciences (MSAIS).
While many people are aware of the dangers of this technology, especially surrounding doctored photos and manipulated voices, there aren't really any guardrails in place. This alone has created doubt, hesitancy, questions, and even fear about the validity of information — and what it means for the future.
DBU's master's degree in Ethical AI provides a framework for these guardrails based on a Christian worldview. We are among the first schools to have a master's degree that is focused on the intersection of AI, ethics, and Strategic Decision Sciences.
About DBU's AI Ethics Degree
The Master of Science in Ethical AI and Strategic Decision Sciences (MSAIS) is a disruptive leadership program designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in the intersection of artificial intelligence, data analytics, and strategic decision-making.
This Ethical AI degree program offers a comprehensive curriculum that blends technical expertise with business acumen, preparing graduates to thrive in roles that require innovative thinking, data-driven strategies, and a deep understanding of AI technologies.
The Intersection of Ethics, Faith, and AI
While AI is a technology that has been around for decades, dating back to the 1950s, it has only recently come to widespread attention and concern, especially with the release of ChatGPT in 2022 and the rapid progression of generative AI in 2023.
As these technological advancements raise profound ethical questions, DBU's MSAIS degree integrates discussions on AI ethics. It encourages students to contemplate these challenges through the lens of a Christian worldview, fostering a holistic understanding of the implications of their decisions on both a technical and moral level.
"Our goal is to future-proof leaders and thereby transform organizations through the finished work of Christ," says Sharon Gorikapudi, Program Director of the MSAIS program.
In Dallas-Fort Worth, there are many businesses, industries, and organizations that have a history of dedication to the study of AI. As part of this master's degree in AI ethics, DBU leverages those experts' knowledge and years of experience in the field, thereby enhancing real-world learning for students.
Ultimately, the MSAIS degree is designed to produce graduates who are not only proficient in the technicalities of AI but also conscious of the broader societal and ethical challenges posed by AI. By combining technical expertise with ethical awareness (stemming from a Christian worldview and strategic acumen), the program aims to shape the next generation of leaders in the AI industry.
