DBU Report, 3000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211-9299. news@dbu.edu. DBU upperclassmen, along with DBU President Dr. Adam C. Wright, prepare to greet incoming first-year and transfer students for SWAT.
DBU REPORT 4 DBU eagerly opened its gates to a new class of Patriots for the 2021 Student Welcome and Transition, more commonly known on campus as SWAT. This Fall, DBU welcomed our largest-ever incoming first-year and transfer class with 844 students. More than 700 of these new Patriots attended SWAT, accompanied by some 100 upperclassman leaders. University Hill was once again alive with excitement, as both new and returning students dove into SWAT 2021. “SWAT is definitely one of my favorite campus traditions!” says Wayne Briggs, who serves as the Director of Student Life at DBU. “One of the best parts of my job is getting to see our students get plugged in and invested in the University.” DBU clings tightly to a number of cherished SWAT traditions. The foot-washing ceremony and Candlelighting service bring small group leaders and classmates closer together through times of worship and prayer. Events like Patriot Follies, where each group collaborates on a performance to showcase their team, and Scoop and Scoot, the ice cream social held on the new intramural field, allow first-year students to bond with one another in fellowship and fun. During the President’s Reception, DBU President Dr. Adam Wright and his wife, Candice, open up the President’s Home on campus to new students and greet all in attendance. On Friday, August 20, small groups dispersed throughout the DFW area for various service projects. Students were given the opportunity to serve in a number of ways, including pantry reorganization, meal package preparation for children, restocking shelves, community outreach, and more through DBU’s community partners. DBU proudly partners with Mission Arlington, Brother Bill’s Helping Hand, Cornerstone Baptist Church, and many others. SWAT concluded with a final closing session followed by the SWAT Block Party near the Brownstone apartments. After a summer spent serving, vacationing, and learning all across the globe, there is no joy that compares to being reunited as the DBU Family once again. On the Monday following SWAT, returning and new Patriots alike came together to kick off the new semester with the first allcampus Chapel service since March of 2020. Dr. Wright introduced DBU’s theme verse for the new academic year, John 15:5, and encouraged and challenged the DBU Family in saying “We will not be able to be the solution this world needs apart from Christ.” What a beautiful reminder it is that we are not called to walk through this life alone, evidenced by the love so freely given by our truest friend, our most faithful companion, Jesus Christ. Welcome Week gave opportunities for students to get plugged in both on and off campus. With the annual THE HILL REUNITES ONCE AGAIN SWAT & Welcome Week 2021
FALL 2021 5 Welcome Back Party on Monday, BSM Coffeehouse on Tuesday, the BSM’s FLOW (Free Lunch on Wednesday) and Pepsi Break on Wednesday, and Wings and a Movie on Thursday, Welcome Week was full of excitement and fellowship. In the DBU Family, there is a place for everyone. The first few weeks back on campus embody DBU’s goal to cultivate Christ-like community on campus and offer opportunities for every Patriot to find their place. With the SWAT and Welcome Week behind us and a full year before us, DBU expectantly awaits all this year has in store. “We stand in awe of what the Lord has done,” said Dr. Wright. “The challenges before us were great, but our God is greater. We give Him all the glory and are overjoyed to serve the students we have prayed earnestly for and that He has brought to University Hill.”

DBU REPORT 14 “The ultimate heart of DBU Chapel Worship is to reflect and usher in the Kingdom of God together,” shares student Libby Swan. “I have seen the Lord promoting unity, friendship, and growth within our community as we seek His Kingdom above our own. We have such an incredible team! I’m so honored and grateful to be able to do the things I love with people I love.” “The ultimate heart of DBU Chapel Worship is to reflect and usher in the Kingdom of God together.” Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning at 10:00 a.m., throughout the fall and spring semesters, a rotating team of uniquely talented singers and musicians leads the student body in a time of inspirational worship. Behind the scenes, the DBU Chapel Worship team seeks to be “a vibrant and diverse community of students that exists to bring glory to God through authentic worship, songwriting, musical training, and developing disciples of Jesus,” explains Director of Worship, Jared Smith. DBU CHAPEL WORSHIP
FALL 2021 15 The Lord has brought countless gifted individuals to campus who each contribute to the DBU Family in a one-of-a-kind way. It is out of an overflow of thankfulness to God that these students dedicate their time and talents to praise the Lord through their involvement in DBU Chapel Worship. “DBU Chapel Worship has allowed me to grow in my creativity as a musician and work on my craft as a leader,” says student Connor Cox. “I believe it’s our individuality and the uniqueness of each member that set us apart. We have so many different backgrounds, and we all come together to praise the one true King.” DBU Chapel Worship has been given the unique opportunity to write, record, and produce some of their very own music, including “Death to Life,” “Who You Are,” and “Steadfast Love.” The process, which eventually leads to releasing a song takes time, creativity, and collaboration. Once a semester, the team will hold a songwriting retreat where 20-30 students are given the opportunity to split into teams and diligently brainstorm ideas for original songs. The team’s favorites are refined, converted to demos for review within the DBU Family, sent out to a producer, recorded, and released for the whole world to hear. Almost everything heard on a DBU Chapel Worship recording is played by a DBU student. As musicians, it is Smith’s desire for team members to leave DBU “with a portfolio in one hand and a diploma in the other.” His hope is for students to make connections and build their résumé before they step out into their respective careers. DBU is committed to building partnerships with current influential worship leaders in the DFW area and beyond. The program also offers two forms of scholarships for students, including a first-year scholarship and a current member scholarship. Both are audition-based and chosen annually. “I have been so encouraged by the heart behind the team, and I am honored to be a part of it,” says student Grace Tanner. “The Chapel Worship team has given me a place to grow in my relationship with the Lord, a way to serve my school and my peers, a creative outlet, and a fun group of friends!” “The chapel worship team has given me a place to grow in my relationship with the Lord, a way to serve my school and my peers, a creative outlet, and a fun group of friends!” Apart from their commitment to serving on campus, each Chapel Worship member is challenged to become involved in the local church. From leading worship in church services, to playing Disciple Now retreats and conferences, to inviting churches to Night of Worship events on the DBU campus, DBU Chapel Worship encourages the cultivation of biblical community both on and off campus. The Lord is doing a great work through DBU Chapel Worship in dedication to His glory and the pursuit of excellence in vision, craft, and community-building. DBU Chapel Worship songs and albums are available for listening and download on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. Scan to listen to DBU Chapel Worship.
DBU REPORT 16 Each year, DBU provides students with travel study trips and mission opportunities that take them around the country and globe. This Fall, after having to postpone trips in 2020 because of the pandemic, classes were back on as the Gary Cook School of Leadership, Baptist Student Ministry, and College of Business offered three informative, insightful, and challenging Fall Break trips to students. Revolutionary Leadership Dr. David Cook, Dean of Global Studies and PreProfessional Studies, and Dr. Jodi Grimes, Associate Professor of English, led the short-term travel course to Boston, Massachusetts, this year. “I love leading this trip because it truly helps history come alive for students,” said Dr. Cook. “I think these trips are unique opportunities to help students get outside their comfort zones to see how God is working across the world.” While in Boston, the group attended church at the Old North Church, toured Harvard University, visited Carson Nature Preserve, sailed the Historic Boston Harbor Cruise, toured Waldon Pond, and visited many other historical landmarks. “Being in the place where the Revolution actually started was a surreal experience for me,” said student Taylor Gee. “It further solidified my love of history, but also helped give me more insight into the Revolutionary time period, a time I haven’t studied as in depth as others.” Beyond the Classroom
FALL 2021 17 Serving in the Northwest Eric Bean, DBU BSM Director, and Shelby Weatherly, Director of Global Missions/Director of Gunn Hall Global Scholars Program, led the BSM mission trip to Corvallis, Oregon. Throughout the trip, DBU students partnered with Northwest Collegiate Ministry at Oregon State University to “Reach the Campus, Reach the World.” According to Josiephine Allen, “I was challenged in being bold in sharing my love for the gospel, and despite students rejecting me, I was in awe with the work God was doing on the campus.” Through outreach tables, spiritual surveys, prayer walks, events, and gospel appointments, the DBU students and staff had a goal of sharing the gospel with college students at Oregon State University. The Business of Disney Dr. Ed Walker, Assistant Professor of Camp and Sport Ministry and Director of Hospitality Management & Camp and Sport Leadership program, and Desi Henk, Assistant Vice President, Center for Career and Professional Development, led the travel course to Walt Disney World in Florida to take a behind-the-scenes look at the business of the Magic Kingdom. “Before our trip started, we were required to read Be Our Guest: Perfecting the Art of Customer Service by Theodore Kinni,“ said Ava Famularo, a freshman majoring in Hospitality Management. “The book talked about Disney’s four keys to success, their Cast member’s requirements, and how every guest’s needs should be met and more. Being able to get a basic understanding of how the company works before seeing them in action was eye-opening.” Throughout the trip, the group visited each resort location at Walt Disney World as professors led in class discussions about the business mechanics of Disney itself. “A key part of the college experience happens beyond the classroom,” explained Dr. Ed Walker. “The lifelong friendships our students build in DBU travel-study programs will become a network of business connections and partners in the industry.“ “God truly is always faithful!” said freshman student Mackenzie Corn. “He gave me strength to not fear rejection, but to spread His love and hope to students who are facing hard times.”
DBU REPORT 18 Sandra Crawford Williamson can be described in one single word: resilient. Through trial after trial, the Lord has molded her into exactly the leader He has called her to be. DBU was blessed and honored this fall to welcome Sandra into the Patriot family as Assistant Professor of Management in the College of Business, teaching management, marketing, and entrepreneurship courses. Sandra was born and raised in a small town near New Orleans, Louisiana. Following high school, she attended Louisiana State University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Communication. Her free-spirited and dedicated nature led Sandra to launch out from her hometown to become a highly distinguished and seasoned executive, Wall Street industry expert, author, executive coach, and public speaker. Prior to her time at DBU, she held many C-suite roles, including CEO, COO, and Chief Marketing Officer at a $3 billion firm. She received an MBA in the midst of all her business endeavors while working overseas. Sandra became self-sufficient, successful, and highly respected. She added one accomplishment after another to her long list of achievements, but sacrificed her relatonships along the way. On September 11, 2001, Sandra’s life was entirely flipped upside down. “The chaos of that day still feels like it was yesterday to me,” she says. As she stood in New York City, the first plane involved in the tragedy of 9/11 flew over her head and crashed into the World Trade Center. “People were running around, panicking, trying to find their kids, calling their friends, calling their family, calling their spouse, calling their kids,” Sandra remembers, “and I realized I had no one to call.” “I thought, this is it, this is probably my end on earth,” Sandra continues. “And I had this flash of emptiness. Everything I had chased up until that point had been about worldly possessions, worldly success. Everything I had been chasing for 34 years was literally blowing in the wind down the street— cash, papers, computer parts. God used that awful day to show me how empty my life was.” As she tucked away the still, small voice of the Lord in the back of her mind, she helped in any way she could that day, trying to give blood, keeping her team together, and weaving past bomb dogs to return to her hotel. Sandra found herself stuck on the island for days. Finally, she successfully bribed a taxi driver into taking her across the George Washington Bridge, out of the city and into New Jersey where she was able to rent one of the last cars available to make her way to her home in Orlando. “As I drove away from that city, my entire outlook on life and the Lord changed,” Sandra says. “I became aware of my mortality and realized that what was on my business card and my paycheck meant nothing.” It was then that she began rekindling old friendships and reigniting a deeper walk with the Lord. Upon arriving back in Orlando, she reconnected with her best friend in high school and college roommate, Judy. Soon after, she began dating Judy’s older brother, Jeff. On April 17, 2004, she and Jeff got married, something she never thought she would do. The Lord was actively breaking down the walls Sandra had put up for so long. Together, Jeff and Sandra began attending church once again. On Mother’s Day in 2005, while pregnant with their first child, Jenna, she was baptized and renewed her relationship with Christ. Jenna was born on August 20, 2005. When Jenna was just a year old, the Williamsons found out that Sandra was pregnant once again with their second child. While at an ultrasound 13 weeks into her Faith Purified Through Adversity Sandra Crawford Williamson
FALL 2021 19 pregnancy, the couple received the news that due to a heart defect, baby Kathleen would not be able to live outside of Sandra’s body. That very same evening, the doctor called Sandra to tell her that she had cancer. “God was the only way to get through it,” she says. Because of the ultrasound that discovered the tragic news about baby Kathleen, the doctors had discovered her cancer early on. By the grace of God alone, the cancer was gone after only one treatment. Though the Williamsons battled multiple miscarriages and infertility for years, the Lord has miraculously blessed them with two boys, Jonah (12) and James (10), in addition to their daughter Jenna (16). With her many accomplishments and abilities, Sandra’s greatest joy is her role as a wife and mother. In 2015, the Lord used another health battle to halt Sandra—for the first time in years, she didn’t update her LinkedIn, didn’t go into work, didn’t tirelessly seek opportunities. She simply sat and let her body recover. These quiet days led to the Lord opening doors that eventually resulted in her becoming an adjunct professor at DBU in 2018, and the rest is history. Now, in what seems to be the calm after a lifetime of storms, the Lord has led Sandra to serve at DBU. She brings to the table over 20 years of general management, marketing, and sales experience—but perhaps even more—the example of her faith that has withstood much adversity. It is with outstretched arms and open hearts that DBU embraces Sandra Crawford Williamson into the Patriot family, excited to learn from all the Lord has done in and throughout her truly inspiring life. “God has continued to reveal to me that He has put me through the refiner’s fire to give me a pure heart and spirit so that I can encourage others,” Sandra concludes. “Now at DBU, I finally have the opportunity to live out my Ephesians 2:10 calling every day!” “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10 Watch Sandra tell her story on video.
DBU REPORT 20 RANGERS NIGHT AT THE BALLPARK NEWS&NOTES On September 29, DBU Athletics partnered with the Texas Rangers for the annual “Night at the Ballpark,” where the Rangers played the Los Angeles Angels. This was the first Night at the Ballpark in the Rangers’ new Globe Life Field. One special thing about Night at the Ballpark is that DBU and the Texas Rangers partner to offer a DBURangers themed item. This year, the item offered was a bucket hat that was only available by buying a ticket through a special link on the DBU Athletics page. So many DBU students, staff, and alumni purchased tickets to the game that the bucket hats were sold out by the 2nd inning! Though the Rangers fell short to the Angels, the DBU Family was able to gather across the stadium in Arlington to enjoy a fun-filled evening. To keep up with special events like this, be sure to follow the DBU Patriots and the DBU Alumni Association on social media and visit dbu.edu/alumni to update your information.
FALL 2021 21 Nationally syndicated talk show host Dennis Prager joined the DBU Family on September 22 to share with students in a morning Chapel service and with faculty, staff, and offcampus guests at an evening dinner followed by a lecture presentation and Q&A in Pilgrim Chapel in partnership with the Institute for Global Engagement. Lee Bratcher, Director of the IGE, opened with remarks on the early foundations of the Institute and its vision to engage cultural issues from a Biblical perspective. These were followed by an introduction by Dr. Adam C. Wright, DBU President. The theme of Prager’s IGE presentation, “American Free Enterprise and Human Flourishing,” discussed the urgency of remaining faithful to biblical moral values in the midst of a cultural shift that is increasingly undermining them. Prager is co-founder of Prager University (PragerU), the most viewed conservative video site in the world, and is a New York Times bestselling author of nine books on various subjects. He has traveled to more than 130 countries and has lectured on all the world’s continents. He completed graduate work at the Russian and Middle East Institutes of the Columbia University School of International Affairs and has taught Russian and Jewish history at Brooklyn College.
