The Cheer Team was led by Head Coach Callie Taylor and Graduate Assistant Coaches Haiden Herring and Presley Gilcrease. The Patriettes were led by Head Coach Brittni Bean and Assistant Coach Mackenzie Lee.

DBU REPORT 4 HIS FAITHFULNESS IS OUR HOPE Lessons Learned & Looking Forward “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” For over 30 years, Jeremiah 29:11-13 has been our theme Scripture passage at DBU. Stories from former prospective students, students, and DBU alumni, often share how it was these particular verses that impacted their calling to choose University Hill. The words first spoken to Israel by the prophet Jeremiah were to sustain them through some very difficult days in their history. What assurance did they have that God would be with them? How did they know His Word would be true? They knew by looking back and remembering where they had come from. The children of Israel were continuously reminded to consider God’s history of faithfulness to them as they moved forward with hope and obedience into the future. This was the primary purpose of remembering the Passover and Exodus from Egypt wherever they went. Oftentimes, they would also mark the place where God acted in a powerful way on their behalf. One of these instances is found in 1 Samuel 7:12, following victory over the Philistines: “Then Samuel took

SUMMER 2021 5 a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’” In the New Testament, Jesus took bread, “gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me’” (Luke 22:19). The disciples were instructed to continue doing this, memorializing the great things God had done, with their eyes set on the future return of the Lord. This past year, by the grace of God, we were able to witness His faithfulness to DBU in remarkable ways. We were able to do more than just endure the pandemic. We certainly had to make adjustments, but with proper cautions in place, we continued to press on in our mission of transforming and equipping servant leaders. We celebrated annual traditions beloved to our University Family, including a virtual Russell H. Perry Free Enterprise Award Dinner, Commencement, Ruth Awards Christmas program, MLK Unity Walk, Patriot Baseball Banquet, Spring Sing, and Homecoming. “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah 29:11-13 Baseball won the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title this year, and several of our Athletics teams achieved top 10 rankings, while our Women’s Golf, Patriettes, and Cheer teams made University history as national champions.

DBU REPORT 6 “Future generations will look back on this past season at DBU and will join with us in praising God for His overwhelming faithfulness,” reflects DBU President, Dr. Adam C. Wright. “Now, with this year behind us, but never forgotten, we are already expecting even greater things in the year ahead. Our hope is in the Lord, and we remain steadfast in praying every day for His blessing over the DBU campus and for the students that He has brought—and will bring—to be uniquely transformed here.” “Future generations will look back on this past season at DBU and will join with us in praising God for His overwhelming faithfulness.” Dr. Adam C. Wright With this past challenging year in their rearview, our faculty and staff are reflecting on what they learned, while preparing to lead DBU effectively into a new year and are ready to welcome a whole new incoming generation of freshmen to life on the Hill later this summer. We asked several of our leaders here on campus to share their reflections on the past year along with their excitement for what is to come, and we pray their thoughts will inspire you to pause and join with us in giving thanks to the Lord for the legacy of His faithfulness to this University and our hope for the future. ________________________ Connor Smith Director of Athletics Despite the most unusual year in program history, our coaches, staff, and student-athletes have risen to the occasion and relentlessly pursued excellence. It has been the most successful year in our department’s history, both on and off the playing surfaces, and we give all of the glory and the praise to God. I am so proud of each of our programs and how they have modeled perseverance and leadership each step of the way. ________________________

SUMMER 2021 7 ________________________ David Reyes Dean of Spiritual Life This past year has been the most challenging year for me, however many good things came. There were many stressful moments, but walking through this season allowed me to cling to the Lord more than I ever have and see His faithfulness. We had to learn to lead in crisis. There may have been many small things, but each day brought unexpected twists. Through planning more events to keep students engaged, to contact tracing students, and to planning strategically for future growth and sustainability, it was a balancing act. I have seen an increase in students wanting to pursue leadership development as they have seen various leaders handle the pandemic differently but also see a need for more strong leaders. Our Patriot Leadership Institute— which consists of the Emerging Leader Program, Advanced Leader Program, and Ministry Leadership Program—saw a growth of students wanting more leadership development. All of these programs had great success as these students desired to improve their leadership. My goal is that we can continue to grow and develop those programs and get more students involved. I am excited to expand our Spiritual Life programming this fall as we relaunch our Men’s and Women’s ministry to provide more outlets for discipleship for our students. The fall is a great time to reengage students who may have felt disconnected in the past, and our hope is that more student organizations and more events will allow them to connect. ________________________

DBU REPORT 8 _______________________ Wayne Briggs Director of Student Life This has been the most life-changing year for me since I graduated with my undergraduate degree. I had finally settled in as the Resident Director of Lange when the pandemic started. It was heartbreaking to spend the second half of my first year as RD relatively alone in Lange, as many sheltered in place. The news of an in-person Fall 2020 semester was such a blessing! My fellow RDs and I navigated the hectic waters of University Housing in the midst of the pandemic. Nights were long, and I was physically, mentally, and emotionally drained by November. Then, I was approached with a new job offer. To my surprise, I was offered the role of Director of Student Life, beginning Spring 2021. It took so much strength to trust that the Lord was working for my good by changing my life so drastically. After all, being an RD was my favorite job that I had ever had. Looking back on that decision, I can see that God knew I needed rest. I was reminded that even when my whole world centers on caring for others, the Lord never stops caring for me. As I transitioned into the new role, I learned the value of delegation. My student workers welcomed me so well, and we were able to move through the rest of the semester with unity and determination. “I truly believe that this upcoming year will be filled with refreshing moments for our students to enjoy.” This fall will be my first fall semester as Director of Student Life. I could not be more thrilled for the opportunities planned to engage our new and current students. I truly believe that this upcoming year will be filled with refreshing moments for our students to enjoy. The Student Life office will be working diligently over the summer to prepare for some new events as well as our campus favorites. ________________________

SUMMER 2021 9

DBU REPORT 10 On April 21 and 22, Dallas Baptist University held the sixth annual Lion’s Den DFW Conference and Pitch Competition on campus. Grateful to be back live and in person after hosting last year’s conference online due to COVID-19, this year’s event was a great success and made Christ-centered business tactics accessible to all in attendance—professionals, entrepreneurs, and DBU students. Sponsoring organizations for the event included: HighGear, Sedera, Ambassadors Impact Network, Joseph Advisory, Eagle Venture Fund, MyStreme, WeldenField, Legends Texas, Barham & Maucere LLC, Impact Foundation, and EverSource Wealth Advisors. Founders of the DFW Lion’s Den event, Dallas business leaders Ed Pearce and Vip Vipperman, took part in the original Lion’s Den event in Birmingham, Alabama. The duo desired to hold a similar event right in the heart of Texas—thus, The Lion’s Den DFW was born. Since its creation, DBU has served as the conference’s host facility and the bond between the two groups has grown each year. Dr. Ross O’Brien, Director of the Center for Business as Mission (BAM) at DBU, explains that when BAM was established in 2013, one of the long-term goals the department had was to hold a faith-oriented business plan competition. “I thought it would take years to develop this event as there are so many components to such an event and a lot of resources required to carry it out,” explains Dr. O’Brien. “However, within the first year the Lord led a few businessmen to our doorstep.” This year, the conference held on campus consisted of a two-day event composed of both virtual and in-person breakout sessions, including a Keynote Luncheon with Emmy-Award winning journalist, podcaster, speaker, and best-selling author Paula Faris. In addition to five highly accredited individuals, this year two DBU students—Jessica Fragoso and Tamanno Hodjihanova—were able to serve as judges for the annual Pitch Competition. Three awards were given based on the following criteria: Economic—most likely to have a solid The Lion’s Den DFW Conference 2021: Living Out “Business as Mission” financial return on investment; Mission—most likely to have a sound ministry or missional impact; and Overall— the best combination of economic and missional impact. Not only do those who attend receive trustworthy business advice and the opportunity to see real life entrepreneurs at work, throughout the course of the conference, Dr. O’Brien explains, “Students get to see examples of companies that genuinely seek to honor the Lord and co-labor with Him in restoring creation. They see real life examples of what we talk about in class.” The founders of many of the companies in attendance are often willing to visit with students. The conference acts as a great networking opportunity for investors, entrepreneurs, and DBU students. The event also gives exposure to DBU and its beautiful campus. The hard work of The Lion’s Den DFW does not begin or end with the annual conference. In addition to the event held at DBU, The Lion’s Den DFW holds virtual Practice Pitch Breakfasts the second Tuesday of every month. These events are free, informative, and a fun way to connect with other entrepreneurs around the country. DBU is proud to partner with Christian organizations like The Lion’s Den DFW that show students what it means to truly carry out Business as Mission and encourage Christian businessmen and women to invest their efforts in Kingdom impacting endeavors. DBU REPORT 12 MAY 2021 COMMENCEMENT With necessary precautions in place, Dallas Baptist University held four in-person Spring Commencement ceremonies in Pilgrim Chapel on May 13 and 14, celebrating 333 bachelor’s graduates, 209 master’s graduates, and 12 doctoral graduates. In his opening remarks to the graduating class of 2021, Dr. Adam C. Wright encouraged this new generation of alumni who are being called out to serve the Lord in these especially unusual and difficult times that they must daily seek wisdom, spiritual discernment, and learn to wait upon the Lord. “Too often we get ahead of God. We should be reflective, still, and wait. God will show you. He will make His will evident and known if we will truly pray ‘Thy will be done.’” During each of the commencement services, special addresses were given by three beloved Christian leaders who have each impacted both DBU and the world for Christ. 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m Thursday: Jurie Kriel Jurie Kriel, together with his wife Karin, are innovating 5twelve City Church, reaching the urban core of Austin, Texas. SUMMER 2021 15 This year, DBU introduced a new travel study trip to South Carolina. The trip, envisioned and led by Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Jay Harley, focused on South Carolina’s role in both the Civil War and the Civil Rights Era. Students traveled to various cities across South Carolina. While in Charleston, the group visited sites such as Fort Sumter, where the first shots in the Civil War were fired. They also saw Drayton Hall, a prominent plantation preserved and transformed into a museum. They visited the Old Slave Mart Museum, the location where slaves were auctioned in Charleston, and the Mother Emanuel AME Church, the oldest African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Southern U.S., with a rich history Spring Break in South Carolina which includes the location of the tragic Charleston church shootings in 2015. In Columbia, the students visited the Modjeska Monteith Simkins House, a museum celebrating the life and legacy of the civil rights activist, and the South Carolina State House, where the group met with State Senator Thomas McElveen. Throughout the trip, Dr. Harley, Dr. Tempress Asagba, Dean of Students, and Dr. Jordan Davis, Director of Counseling and Spiritual Care, gave engaging lectures and provided students with thought-provoking questions for reflection. The following pages provide reflections from students. DBU students, staff, and faculty pictured with State Senator Thomas McElveen at the South Carolina State House

DBU REPORT 16 Anna Taylor, Senior One of the most meaningful places for me was the Mother Emanuel AME Church. We visited the site in Charleston and learned how involved members of the church were in the Civil Rights movement and how central the church was for Black Americans during the emancipation period. Black churches in general were outlawed at one point in South Carolina because they preached the message of freedom for all. The church bravely continued to preach the message of freedom, even when they had to go underground. This place was a testament to me of the boldness, bravery, and resilience of black communities in this country. The trip reminded me in so many ways that injustice is always worth speaking out against and justice is always worth fighting for. I believe God calls us to do this work, and I am inspired by those who have bravely answered that call in American history. Joey Razo, Graduate Student One of the most impactful sites for me on the trip was the Modjeska Monteith Simkins House. Here was the home of a Civil Rights leader who acted nearly 40 years before Martin Luther King, Jr., yet her name was not known to many in our group. Her work laid out the foundation and support that would be needed for effective change. The time we took to listen to her story, see the fruits of her labor, and understand her struggle was eye opening. She was an ordinary individual who made extraordinary choices, and her home was a lesson of the future and what can happen when we let our hearts be opened, our bodies be instruments, and our voices be heard. It is on each of us to make the conscious decision to be a part of change. People like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Modjeska Simkins were just ordinary people. They made the decision to stand up for their own rights and the rights of others, and it is also on us to make that same choice. Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston Dr. Tempress Asagba, DBU Dean of Students, speaks with students in front of Gantt Cottage, the location where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote his iconic “I Have a Dream.”

SUMMER 2021 17 Josiephine Allen, Junior Visiting Drayton Hall impacted me the most on the trip. Upon walking on its front steps I was mesmerized with its Palladian architecture, live oak trees, Spanish moss, and a beautiful view of the Ashley River. I viewed the plantation as a tourist attraction and felt guilty right after. I had to divert my focus to the fact that this place wasn’t beautiful to the enslaved people who lived there years ago. They endured such hardship in that very place. They were denied freedom, mistreated, and even stripped of their identity. It was emotional to walk through Drayton Hall. I am thankful to DBU for letting me be a part of this new travel opportunity. Though there was a lot to unpack, I discovered so much not only about myself, but also about many others. I am an African-American woman who will always remember the lives of those enslaved, brutally taken, and those who bravely fought for equal rights. This trip has encouraged me to celebrate those that have worked hard for civil rights and continue learning about others who left their footprints. Edgar Ramirez, Junior We had many tough conversations as a group throughout the whole experience. These conversations would have to be my favorite part of our time in South Carolina because of how impactful they have been in shaping a lot of my current views. We discussed topics such as the twisted psychology of slavery while at Drayton Hall and the harsh truths behind symbols while at the State House in Columbia. I couldn’t have imagined that I would grow as much as I did during the week in South Carolina. One of my favorite takeaways from the trip is that we should not run away from difficult conversations but instead be open to learning from them. We should educate ourselves about difficult and controversial subjects while also viewing history through a critical lens in order to grow as a society. I am beyond thankful for the wisdom that was shared from our trip leaders, and I plan to incorporate these truths into my everyday life. I am glad to say that I returned to Texas as a more educated and appreciative person than I was before I left. An outside image of Drayton Hall outside of Charleston, and below is an interior image of the slave quarters located in the basement. Dr. Jordan Davis, DBU Director of Counseling and Spiritual Care, leads a discussion with students about some of the difficult and painful aspects of history.

DBU REPORT 18 For more than 20 years, DBU has partnered with churches around the world to provide scholarship funds for incredible students. Currently, as churches provide scholarship money for their selected students, DBU will match dollar for dollar up to $3,500 per academic year, doubling that amount to potentially become $7,000 of aid for individuals seeking to fulfill their academic calling. Below, we have listed the churches who provided scholarship aid for their students in 2020, along with the total amount of aid they provided, and the number of donations they made. During that year, DBU helped students through this program by matching $1.8 million in scholarships. Is your church a part of this list? Would you like for it to be? If you would like more information about this special program, please contact DBU Financial Aid at 214.333.5363 or finaid@dbu.edu or go to www.dbu.edu/financial-aid. DBU REPORT 24 In theImage of our Creative God “It is a privilege to be able to create things because God created the whole universe and all that is in it,” shares Rachel Rolfe, a sophomore majoring in commercial art. Like so many other students who have chosen DBU to develop their gifts in the visual arts, Rachel views her work as an extension of being made in the image of God—our perfect Creator. DBU’s Department of Visual Arts strives to help mold the next generation of servant leaders by guiding students to excel in areas such as drawing, painting, design, visual communication, art history, advertising, photography, and studio art.
