DBU REPORT 24 In theImage of our Creative God “It is a privilege to be able to create things because God created the whole universe and all that is in it,” shares Rachel Rolfe, a sophomore majoring in commercial art. Like so many other students who have chosen DBU to develop their gifts in the visual arts, Rachel views her work as an extension of being made in the image of God—our perfect Creator. DBU’s Department of Visual Arts strives to help mold the next generation of servant leaders by guiding students to excel in areas such as drawing, painting, design, visual communication, art history, advertising, photography, and studio art. The mission of the department is to prepare students for a professional career in the visual arts and to offer opportunities for creative fulfillment for all students at DBU, pursuing excellence and artistic achievement for the glory of God. The three Biblical principles that guide the vision of the department are edification, actively building up those around us (I Corinthians 10:23-24); preservation, upholding orderliness, craftsmanship, and a Biblical work ethic (Colossians 4:6); and glorification, bringing glory to God first and foremost (I Corinthians 10:31, Ecclesiastes 12:13). Majors offered in the program include Commercial Art, Digital Photography, Graphic Design, and Studio Art, allowing students to take courses such as Business of Photography, History of Graphic Design, Color and Composition, Painting, and Illustration.
