DBU REPORT 26 critique sessions and exhibits. During their last year, students display their work in the Senior Show, with one piece of work presented to the Art Department as a part of the permanent collection for the University. “At DBU our Art and Design faculty are working together to build not only a good Art Department, but a competitive Art Department,” says Jim Hutchinson, who serves as Chair of DBU’s Department of Visual Arts. “Over the past four years we have seen constant growth in all of our art majors, and we are excited to see students coming from all over to hone their skills for a professional career in studio art, design, illustration and photography. This fall we are excited to be adding another art room to our department, giving us more space to pursue more advanced techniques in classical drawing and design.” On the Hill, students, faculty, and staff have the opportunity to enjoy art shows and special displays, showcasing the artistic talent and creativity of students like the ones we’ve featured on these pages. Sophomore Rachel Rolfe Commercial Art Major “My artwork depicts Christ’s sacrifice for all. When the time came for me to complete my last project in Painting II, I wanted to paint something special and more challenging. From the beginning of this class, I had always pictured myself painting a picture of Jesus, so I knew I had to do that for my last project. What inspired me to paint this piece was another artist’s version of this particular picture. I had the desire to worship the Lord while creating art at the same time, and I wanted to dedicate a painting specifically to Him, so that’s why I chose this subject. This was my favorite painting I had the opportunity to create this semester, and it was a blessing to me. I found myself eager to work on it every day after class, even when I had no time.”
