SUMMER 2021 27 Graphic Design Major “I have always loved to create, and I love how God has endowed humans with a unique ability to image a tiny sliver of His creativity. I also love getting to make beautiful, functional things. That is something they emphasize in school: Graphic design needs to accomplish its purpose—it needs to effectively communicate a message. To all my fellow art students: remember that is not about pitting your artistic skill against that of others, but it is about celebrating everyone’s unique design capabilities, and embracing opportunities to become better. For example, instead of comparing your work to someone else’s work and getting upset about what you feel yours lacks, glean from what you feel the other person does well! Observe what you think they executed well and look for ways to implement those elements into your own work. Compliment them on it and ask how they do what they do. We have such a unique opportunity to celebrate each other and learn from each other here—we only need to have the right perspective.” Sophomore Deven Reyes Commercial Art Major “This specific piece depicts the love and passion I have for the Walt Disney Company. The man himself (Walt) inspires me. When you take a look at his story underneath a magnifying glass you see the struggle, before any of the fame. That’s why he inspires me to keep pushing! I am passionate about my art because it’s what God has gifted me with, and it would be foolish of me to not get all I can out of it to glorify Him. I would also say that the moment I get to step back and take a look at a finished piece, I feel a sense of relaxation and completion, which is pure bliss to me, and that’s why I do what I do.” Senior Hannah Oman
