SUMMER 2021 33 Jim Hutchinson studied Commercial Art at Pensacola Christian College and began his art career when the school asked him to serve as a layout assistant and illustrator for Abeka Book publications in 1987. He later went on to attend Marywood University to complete his Master of Fine Arts. Upon finishing the degree in 1996, Prof. Hutchinson returned to PCC as chairman of the art department. Leaving PCC in 2007, he came to Dallas and started teaching as an adjunct professor for DBU while working as a freelance illustrator and gallery painter. DBU President Dr. Gary Cook invited Jim to join the communication department full-time in 2008, launching DBU’s new graphic design degree. In 2011, Dr. Cook asked Prof. Hutchinson to chair the communication department, and in 2017, he was moved by the new President, Dr. Adam C. Wright, to chair the Department of Visual Arts. Since that time he has launched two new degrees in Commercial Art and Digital Photography. Hutchinson has paintings featured in AiG’s Ark Encounter Museum exhibits in Kentucky and a few pieces prominently displayed at DBU, such as the portrait of William Berry Dean in the entry hall of the Dean Learning Center. In 2019, he had the opportunity to create four mission paintings for Guidestone Financials’ new upper Dallas facility and has completed multiple corporate portraits for other non-profit organizations. Prints of his paintings are sold through Creator’s Brush gallery (creatorsbrush.com) , and he is a current member of the FAITH Artists of Dallas. Jim and his wife, Ninette, are active members of Prestonwood Baptist Church, Plano, Texas. They have three daughters—Elyse, Mikhayla, and Ansley.
