DBU Report Summer 2021

DBU REPORT 42 Throughout the history of DBU, several student-athletes have made their unique mark on their sport, but perhaps none more than Chandler Jacobs, a four-year Patriot basketball star athlete, team leader, and shining example of servant leadership. Chandler began his four-year career with the Patriots as an outstanding ball handler, leading the team in scoring and earning conference Freshman of the Year honors. Throughout this past year, he showcased what he and his teammates are capable of doing. Jacobs was at the forefront of conference Player of the Year considerations all year round and was named the LSC Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to all of this, he was also named the LSC Academic Player of the Year, earning a cumulative 3.88 GPA as an accounting major, the first player in school history to earn that honor. What is surprising, however, is the secret behind the Missouri City native’s success. “I love who I’ve been created to be and truly believe my worth is found in Christ and not what I can or can’t do for myself,” continues Jacobs. “I have placed pressure on myself for as long as I can remember. I finally feel like I am enough, and that’s been a help to me on the court.” As his career at DBU came to a close, he managed to slash the DBU record books, ranking first in points (1,919), first in field goals (666), second in rebounding (616), and fifth in shooting percentage (54%). During his time as a Patriot, the national media took notice. On January 12, Jacobs became the first player in University history to garner USBWA National Player of the Week honors. Seven days later, he became the first to do it twice. There is, however, an important distinction to be made when understanding Jacobs and his approach to basketball. While the four-year guard removed the weight of expectations from his shoulders, he refused to compromise the effort he pours into his craft. “Chandler really stepped up for us,” explained Head Coach Dr. Blake Flickner. “He’s developed into an all-around player who scores, rebounds, and focuses on making his teammates better.” Because of his outstanding accomplishments and leadership on and off the court, Jacobs was presented with the President’s Senior Servant Leadership Award by Dr. Adam C. Wright at a recent Honors Day Chapel in May (pictured left). This May, Chandler completed his bachelor’s degree at DBU, but due to last year’s season being cut short by COVID-19, the NCAA granted students one extra year of eligibility. Chandler was among a handful of athletes many Division I schools coveted, and this coming year, as Chandler begins his graduate work, you can see him take the court as a Colorado State University. “I’ve always wanted to say basketball was something I did but not who I am,” concludes Jacobs. “Regardless of accomplishments I want to be known as someone who helped others.” CHANDLER JACOBS: A Shining Star On and Off the Court
