DBU REPORT 38 Helping High School Students Get a Head Start on College The DBU Honors Scholars Academy (HSA) is a special program established to provide dual credit classes for college-bound high school students. Eligible high school students have the opportunity to enroll in specially selected DBU courses, allowing them to take college-level classes while also completing their high school education. What is Dual Credit? Dual credit is a special program utilized by high schools that allows certain students to simultaneously earn the necessary high school credits to complete their diploma while also receiving college-level credit that can transfer to most colleges throughout the country. DBU has been providing the Honors Scholars Academy option for many years, helping to give hundreds of students the opportunity to get a head start on their college career while also focusing the needed attention to complete their high school education with flying colors. How does the HSA work? Students can begin taking HSA courses after the completion of four high school courses. The typical student takes up to six hours per semester, and the credits they earn through these courses are transferable to not only DBU, but also other universities and colleges nationwide. How much does it cost? Because of the special nature of this program, the price per class for an HSA course is $450. Are there other benefits? There are many benefits to the HSA program beyond just the potential earned credits. HSA students who complete their coursework are also given preferred admission, in addition to being eligible for a $5,000 scholarship upon full-time enrollment at DBU. These students also have access to all of the University’s academic resources, including the DBU Library, Writing Center, Math Lab, Science Lab, Office 360, and Blackboard. Students also have a dedicated guide to help them navigate enrollment and encourage them along the way.
