DBU REPORT 26 TWO TEAMS SERVING AS ONE The two DBU teams joined forces to serve local schools through sports clinics in Guanacaste and Portegolpe. By the end of the trip, the DBU athletes were so closely knitted together that they felt like members of one strong team for the Lord. Removing themselves from American culture and interacting with the Costa Rican culture helped team members learn from the Costa Ricans’ appreciation for small gestures of kindness, how much they value community, and how little they need to be content in life. “I could see a shift in many of our athletes’ perspectives by the end of the trip. I personally witnessed some of them get spiritually ‘unstuck.’ I saw them give God away, and I saw many seeds planted and watered.” “Seeing the kids cry after we had spent only a few hours with them was eye-opening for everyone,” recalled Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine Courtney Pinson. “I could see a shift in many of our athletes’ perspectives by the end of the trip,” Courtney continued. “I personally witnessed some of them get spiritually ‘unstuck.’ I saw them give God away, and I saw many seeds planted and watered.” Women’s Soccer and Volleyball Serve in Costa Rica LOVE THAT LEADS When the principal casually commented that no Americans had visited their school in over 21 years, the reality of how God works set in. The first group of overdue Americans just so happened to be DBU student-athletes who not only shared their love for sports but also their love for Jesus. This was no ordinary spring break mission trip. The members of the Women’s Soccer and Volleyball teams’ mission trip to Costa Rica were serving a greater purpose.
