DBU REPORT 28 DBU Graduate and Patriot Golfer Finds a New Purpose & A STROKE OF LUCK A STORY OF FAITH After Patriot Golfer Garrett Townsend (‘24) was injured, he embarked on a year-long spiritual transformation that completely changed his outlook on life and golf. With a broken finger and a broken back, he was unable to play or practice. But God had his full attention, and an unexpected silver lining emerged. Through the friendship and influence of many people at DBU and beyond, Townsend became a follower of Christ. “I became a Christian, and then I knew that my worth wasn’t based on a golf score. So it didn’t really bother me if I was playing or not,”Townsend said. “I knew I was working hard for the Lord and not just for myself. It took a bunch of worry and pressure off me, and I was able to swing more freely. But the biggest thing was that it helped me to be a better teammate, and I wasn’t nearly as selfish.” A NEW FOCUS During his junior year, Townsend was well enough to compete in five events, earning two top 10 finishes. During his senior year, he played in two tournaments and qualified for the alternate spot in the postseason. “I guess my role was the sixth man,”Townsend said. “I could be plugged in whenever Coach needed me for tournaments, but outside of tournaments, my role was to lead everybody the best I could. I led some Bible studies and just held people accountable.” Although injuries, setbacks, and disappointments had characterized much of Townsend’s four years as a Patriot Golfer, opportunity, growth, faith, and improvement became the bigger part of his story. “Truthfully, it was DBU as a whole and all the people there that had quite a big role [in my faith],” Townsend continued. “I’m just thankful for how much they truly pour into their students and their athletes.” Since graduating from DBU, Townsend moved to Pottsboro, Texas, to join his father in the construction business. He also works for College Golf Fellowship, a ministry for men’s college golfers. “The biggest thing I’m going to take away from DBU is my faith. Whatever I’m doing, I know I’m working hard for the Lord and not for myself.” Adapted from an article by Graci Henard, Student Assistant for Media Relations
