Dr. Becky Morrison's Background
Dr. Becky Morrison is an Associate Professor of Music and Chair of Music Education. She has taught at the Collegiate level as an Assistant Professor of Music and Chair of Music Education. Dr. Morrison has also taught for 14 years in public schools in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas, where her choirs consistently won superior ratings and recognition. These include Outstanding Jazz Choir, Vocal Sweepstakes, and Grand Sweepstakes. Dr. Morrison was the founder and conductor of the Voices of Ada, a 4th through 9th grade mixed treble honor choir sponsored by the Ada (Oklahoma) Arts Council and the Ouachita Children’s Chorus in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. In addition, her students have also been selected to participate in All-State Choirs as well as the regional and national honor choirs of the American Choral Directors Association. Currently, Dr. Morrison is the director of the Texas Baptist Children’s Choir, a children’s choir in conjunction with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
Morrison began her collegiate studies in music education at Drury University, then completed the Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance at Oklahoma Baptist University. She continued her studies at the University of North Texas, where she received the Master of Music degree in Voice with an emphasis in Opera. Becky earned a Master of Music in Music Education degree from Boston University, where she was a Tanglewood Scholar. Morrison also holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma. In recognition of her academic efforts, she has received the University of Oklahoma Robberson Graduate Research Grant, the Brancati Teacher Development Scholarship from the Cape Coral (Florida) Community Foundation, the Criswell Scholarship from the Ada (Oklahoma) Arts Council, the Williams Music Scholarship from Phi Lambda Theta, the Graduate Student Music Education Scholarship and a Career Development Grant from Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity to further her studies. In 2008 she presented a round table discussion based on her research paper “Current Problems Facing Funding in Music Education” at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development’s Conference Arts Education – to what end? Staying current with the latest research and teaching techniques, Dr. Morrison has augmented her education by studying at the Voice Symposium hosted by Voice Care Associates at the University of Tennessee; with Richard Miller at the Institute of Vocal Performance Pedagogy at Oberlin College-Conservatory of Music; with Stephen Smith at Northwestern University and she studied conducting with Judith Clurman at the Julliard School. Dr. Morrison is certified in the Kodaly methodology through the University of Oklahoma as well as a Level I certification in the Orff method through the University of Missouri. She also is a Level III Certified Teacher of Somatic Voicework -The LoVetri Method in contemporary commercial music styles.
