Reflecting on a Week Spent in New England

From the time our group loaded the bus bright and early on Saturday, October 3rd to the time the last group pulled back onto the DBU campus late in the evening on Saturday, October 8th, the Lord made His glory and power known on our journey to New England. All throughout the rich history of America is proof of the steady hand of God’s providence, an act of grace and mercy we simply did not deserve. Additionally, I am full of thankfulness for the sacrifices and difficult decisions made by faithful individuals who now hold crucial roles in our nation’s history.
As I stood in the quaint home that John Adams was raised in, I couldn’t help but reflect on the leadership of the characters Dr. Cook and Dr. Grimes introduced us to throughout the week. Well-known individuals like Samuel, John, and Abigail Adams, James Otis, Henry David Thoreau, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Jonathan Edwards, and the list goes on, impacted America because they were willing to act with a sense of urgency. Each held their beliefs tightly and felt a strong conviction to not settle for anything less than greatness.
While the over 300-year-old floorboards creaked under our feet in John Adams' home, we were able to see that America was born from truly humble beginnings.
To say that I am thankful for the opportunity I was given to travel to New England would be an understatement. My knowledge of history, literature, and leadership grew exponentially throughout the week, as did the memories and bonds we made as a group. Getting to gain class credit through traveling and experiencing history on the grounds it was made was such a blessing. Outside of Peace Field, John and Abigail Adams’ home, stood a sign with a quote from John that read “Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write.” I pray that Patriots dare to challenge injustice, think deeply about America’s current state, remain curious, and live lives worthy of the calling we have received. Praise be to God for all He has done, is doing, and will do in the lives of His people.
