Your Guide to a Faith-Filled and Fun Weekend in Dallas

For Dallas Baptist University students, life may feel exciting, busy, and even overwhelming at times while trying to balance classwork with a part-time job or internship, time with friends, extracurricular activities, and more.

But when the weekend rolls around, you might also be seeking enriching and restorative activities in Dallas and the surrounding areas.

Consult this list of ideas for fun, faith-filled activities that will bring a spirit of joy to your weekend—and to others, too.

"Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is." — Ephesians 5:15-17 NIV

Serve the City

You can be the hands and feet of Jesus off campus by volunteering in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. DBU has many partnerships with local organizations that are Christ-centered, offering you a chance to be part of a larger community. Here are a few ideas:

Volunteers at Brother Bill's Helping Hand help make their grocery store run week after week. They provide food for underserved communities while empowering residents through employment services, a physical and mental health clinic, and more.

Mission Arlington provides a food and clothing bank, free dental care and counseling services, after-school and summer kids' programs, Bible studies in neighborhood apartments, and holistic care for others in Jesus' name.

Embrace Grace is a Christian ministry devoted to helping single and unexpectedly pregnant young women feel cared for through a connection to the local church. There, they can receive emotional support at every stage of the pregnancy and be discipled in the Gospel. Volunteers help assemble Love Boxes, prep group curriculum items, bundle event handouts, and more.

If you have a heart for refugees, Gateway of Grace volunteers help with refugee families' needs assessments while delivering necessary items, teaming up on events, and providing community through fellowship. There are also opportunities to deliver furniture and plan events for refugee families. You can also help teach essential life skills at the Gateway Educational Ministries.

Have a Bible Study at Klyde Warren Park, located at 2012 Woodall Rodgers Freeway. A beautiful oasis in the heart of Dallas, Klyde Warren Park is an urban deck park covering more than five acres and providing free daily programming. It's also a great place to grab a bite from one of the many food trucks on site and then gather for fellowship and Bible study. This unique setting can inspire spiritual growth as you enjoy the energy of the city juxtaposed with the natural surroundings.

Go to Church

Start the weekend on a worshipful note by attending DBU's Chapel Worship on Fridays at 10 a.m. This regular spiritual practice can provide a sense of purpose and direction. You may also want to explore the Dallas area for a Sunday church service. There are many churches in the DFW area that have ministries and programming for college students and young adults, offering a supportive environment for your faith journey. For more information or recommendations on where you can visit, contact DBU's BSM.

Have a Picnic at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

With 66 acres of colorful flowers, plants, and trees, the world-renowned Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is the perfect place to have a picnic over the weekend. Perhaps you head to the Arboretum after a Sunday church service.

Walk or Bike at White Rock Lake

For another way to get outside and enjoy a slice of nature in the big city, White Rock Lake Park is spread over 1,000 acres and features a 9.3-mile hiking and biking trail. There are pavilions and picnic areas, wetlands, a dog park, kayak rentals, and an Audubon Society bird-watching area.

Attend a DBU Student Event

There are many Christian events in Dallas to explore, but you can also start right on campus at Dallas Baptist University. Our robust events calendar has multiple options seven days a week, like Food & Culture Night or Union Night at the Student Union. You should also consider getting involved in a student club or student organization; there are multiple options across academic, social, service, and spiritual emphases.

Glorify God Through Sports

If you love to be active while enjoying team fellowship, intramural sports are a great way to achieve both. DBU has many leagues with either fall or spring seasons — from co-ed softball, ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball to women's powder puff football, men's flag football, and more.
