Appeals

The DBU Office of Financial Aid recognizes that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may not always accurately represent a student's financial situation or dependency status. While the ability to make adjustments is limited, certain unique circumstances may warrant additional consideration, as outlined below.

  • Special Circumstances refer to financial situations that justify an aid administrator adjusting data elements in the Cost of Attendance or in the SAI calculation.
  • Unusual Circumstances refer to the conditions that justify an aid administrator making an adjustment to a student’s dependency status based on a unique situation, more commonly referred to as a dependency override.

Types of Appeals

Special Circumstances (Change in Circumstances Appeal)
Complete the Change in Circumstances process when special circumstances involve financial situations that justify an adjustment to the data elements used in the Cost of Attendance (COA) or the Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation.

Unusual Circumstances (Petition for Dependency Override)
Parent abandonment, an abusive family environment that threatens the student’s health or safety, incapacitated or incarcerated parents, human trafficking, the student not being able to locate their parents, or being at risk of homelessness are all examples of what would be considered unusual circumstances. Complete this process to be considered for an override of your dependency status on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Appeal
If a student’s Federal Financial Aid has been suspended due to the failure to meet Federal Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements, complete the SAP Appeal Form. Contact us for help.

Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG) Hardship and Suspension Appeal
Complete the Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG) Hardship and Suspension Appeal to request the Office of Financial Aid to consider unusual circumstances that contributed to your inability to meet the TEG Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy:

DBU Scholarship Appeal
The Office of Financial Aid understands that students experience unique circumstances that may cause them not to meet certain requirements for receipt of their DBU scholarship awards. Students who do not meet established scholarship renewal criteria can complete the DBU Scholarship Appeal Form before or during the semester that the student is requesting the reinstatement of their scholarships. Students will receive a decision via email approximately two weeks after the committee review takes place, however, during the start of the semester, processing time may be delayed. For questions concerning the appeal criteria and requirements, email the Office of Financial Aid at finaidscholarships@dbu.edu or call (214) 333-5363.
