The Patriots Bring Home Multiple Championship Titles this Spring
DBU is home to over a dozen NCAA men's and women's sports teams competing to give God glory. The spring semester has been incredibly successful for DBU Athletics, with multiple championship titles brought home.
DBU's Patriettes and Cheer Teams
DBU Patriettes and Cheer team traveled to Daytona, Florida, to defend their championship title. The competition is split into different sections, and DBU was pitted against Tarleton State in the Game Day category, a crowd-involved performance that includes cheer, dance, mascot, and drumline. Tarleton has won the previous few years, but DBU outscored them by 9 points, which was unheard of! The intermediate team competed with a more traditional routine against thirteen other schools and claimed victory for the fourth year in a row. With this victory, DBU has become the team every school wants to beat at NCA.
This year was the first time DBU Cheer competed alongside the DBU drumline. Head Coach Courtney Pinson shared, "Competing with the drumline was so fun! It was something new for us and a challenge due to coordinating all the moving parts into one routine. We loved their vision and spirit and got along very well!" Regarding their victory, she said, "Christ is the center of all we do. We love to be successful and win championships, but if we don't look more like Jesus at the end of the season, then we have missed the mark."
"Being a part of a brand-new division for DBU was one of the best and most exciting experiences, but winning in a new Game Day division was a dream come true. Getting to be a part of this win with cheer, dance, and drumline was something I will remember for the rest of my life!" — Sophomore Lainey Liggett.
DBU's Men's and Women's Golf Teams
On the other side of DBU Athletics, the Men's and Women's Golf teams came out on top in their respective Lone Star Conference Tournaments. The women's team defeated the MSU Mustangs in the semifinals and the OC Eagles in the grand finals.
"Winning the Lone Star Conference championship with my teammates was truly unforgettable! We have been looking forward to the start of the postseason since the nationals ended last year, and I'm so happy to be back in the postseason and competing for the championships with my best friends! After making match play, we knew we would not leave without the trophy, and I'm so thankful for my coach and teammates who always encourage and push one another to be our best on the course and give it our all! It is truly something special when you realize you're playing for something bigger than yourself and playing to honor the Lord and the talents He has given each of us!" — First-year Master's student Jordan Karrh.
The Patriot Men's Golf team claimed their first Lone Star Conference Tournament win by prevailing over Oklahoma Christian in the grand finals match. The team made it to the championship round thanks to Brecken Franklin making a 20ft putt on the last hole during the semifinals. This season was the Patriots' most successful one yet, with four wins this spring.
"I've never been more proud of a group of men, Coach Fey and Braydon Bennett, for chasing excellence every day and building a winning culture. Today, to see those results was just awesome to be a part of," Head Golf Coach Kenny Trapp.
