DBU's Master of Music Education Program Receives Accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music

DBU's College of Fine Arts is excited to announce that on July 15th, 2024, the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) granted Plan Approval for the new online Master of Music (M.M.E.) degree. In NASM parlance, this equates to approval. SACSCOC had previously approved the prospectus for the degree.

The M.M.E. is a new, innovative, and accessible graduate program in music education. It is designed chiefly for people working full-time in music education in both public and private schools. It will enhance their ability to advance in their careers and give them credentials to pursue doctoral work in music education.

This accreditation is the culmination of a dream for the music faculty since 2010. Due to the longstanding quality of DBU's undergraduate music education program, the success of our graduates in the field, and the national reputation of our choral music program, we have had many inquiries over the years from our alumni, as well as others in the field, about the prospect of DBU offering a master's degree in music education.

Seeking both the SACSCOC and NASM approvals for the degree has been an incredible and rewarding journey of collaboration among the music faculty and many others across the DBU community. We are grateful for the support, insight, and collaboration from DBU President Adam C. Wright, the Provost's Office, the Graduate School, and Graduate Admissions. This process was truly a labor of love and community. Dr. Becky Morrison has led in this process and will serve as the inaugural director of the program.

This accreditation announcement from NASM finalizes the approval process and allows us to launch the program fully this fall. Ultimately, we are grateful to God for his provision and blessing in this project, and we feel confident that the lives of our students and those they touch through their work in music education will greatly benefit the profession, society, and the Kingdom!
